Services were held at 10 a.m. March 13 at the Eureka First Baptist Church. Pastor David Richards officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Jo Evans was the pianist, and Becky Stever sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace." Casket bearers were Jason Thornton, Andrew Higbee, Lyle Hawthorne, Larry Fritts, Garry Fritts and Jeremy Gibson. A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard. Higbee was born July 24, 1913, in Neal, to Goldie May (Scott) and William Bertram Higbee. He graduated from Neal High School in 1930. On Sept. 23, 1936, he married Opaldean Coglon in Howard. He worked as a farm hand before working at Dale's Dairy Farm near Eureka in the early 1940s. He began his career with the Missouri-Pacific Railroad during the mid-1940s and was a foreman for many years. In 1965 he was injured in an accident which caused him to retire. His wife died Aug. 30, 1971. On Feb. 27, 1972, he married Esther Viola (Digel) Fritts in Eureka. During his later years, Higbee was employed at Jackson Brothers service station in Eureka until retiring in 1995. His second wife died April 16, 2000. Higbee was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Scott Higbee, Grand Rapids, Minn.; two daughters, Nancy Thornton, Eureka, and Judy Whiteman, Wichita; a stepson, Larry Fritts, Eureka; nine grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. *************************
