Schornack was born on Nov. 15, 1914, in the small rural community of Groton, S.D., the eldest son of George and Olga (Senne) Schornack. He died on April 8, 2006, in Williamston, Mich. He was raised on the farm where he learned his love of animals and sometimes drove a team of eight horses. As a young man, he met his bride-to-be and loving wife of sixty years, Agnes Svarstad, at the school picnic where she taught in Aberdeen. Shortly after World War II broke out they were married and Harold went to welding school so that he could help to build the "arsenal of democracy." Upon graduation, he and several friends moved to Bay City, Mich., where they built landing craft and missile destroyers at Defoe's Shipyard. After the war, Harold went to work for General Motors where he was a loyal employee for thirty years. He loved cars and driving them on summer vacations back to the old "homestead" and all over the U.S.A. Harold was skilled with his hands, quick with a joke, and strong in his faith. He was a devoted husband and father of two sons Dennis (married to Linda Gobler) and Larry (Susan Malloy). His younger brother Alan (aka "Donnie") and a sister Doris Craig, as well as many nieces and nephews, family and friends mourn his loss as well as that of his previously deceased brother Howard. Harold is once again reunited with Agnes where they live in everlasting peace and the fond memories of all who knew them. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Essexville. The Rev. Carl F. Trosien will officiate. Burial will follow at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1705 Nebobish, Essexville, MI 48732. No visiting hours are scheduled at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home.
