Description	:	Harold J Cox, 80, a long time resident of Brewster, passed away Thursday, September 11, 1997, in the Okanogan Douglas Hospital at Brewster. Harold was born near Republic, Washington, December 5, 1916, the son of Charles and Carrie Mae (Tait) Cox. His family moved to Brewster where he went to school and was graduated in 1935. Read More	Harold J Cox, 80, a long time resident of Brewster, passed away Thursday, September 11, 1997, in the Okanogan Douglas Hospital at Brewster. Harold was born near Republic, Washington, December 5, 1916, the son of Charles and Carrie Mae (Tait) Cox. His family moved to Brewster where he went to school and was graduated in 1935. He attended WSU and was graduated in Horticulture in 1940. Mr. Cox entered the Army February 2, 1942 and was discharged as a Major after World War II in 1946. (He was a forward observer in the 104th Infantry Division of the 385th Artillery Battalion in Germany.) On January 20, 1946, he married Lorraine Leirmann in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and they returned to Brewster. He spent his life as an orchardist. He was president of the Board of Brewster Cooperative Growers and on the Board of Magi, Inc.; member of the Washington Horticulture Assn.; a founding member of the South Central Okanogan County Soils Conservation District. He served as Chairman of the Methow-Okanogan Irrigation District for 44 years; was a member of the Brewster American Legion Post #97, and served as on Okanogan County PUD Commissioner. While his children were in school, he served as a member and chairman of the Brewster School Board for 16 years. He was also active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Camp Fire. He was a long time member of the Community Log Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, being in the mountains, gardening, and camping with his family. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, Lorraine, at the home; his five children, Robert Cox of Ridgecrest, California, Carol Dull of Wenatchee, Steven Cox of Brewster, Amy Cox of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mary Cox of Belleview. Six grandchildren, Anna, Levi and Benjamin Cox and Eric, Kathleen and Deborah Dull; also his brother Ralph Cox of Wenatchee; and his sister Blanche Smith of San Carlos, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Melvin Cox. Services were conducted, Saturday, September 13, 197, at 2 p.m. from the Barnes Chapel, Brewster, with Rev. Jerry Peyton and Rev. Ray Glessner co-officiating. Interment in the Brewster Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Services under the direction of Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
