Harold was born October 12, 1918, to Henry and Agnes (Pestotnik) Shell, near Boone in a house located east of the Des Moines River where the original Lincoln Highway crossed. Read More	Harold Joseph Schell, age 94, of Maryville, Missouri, and formerly of Boone, died at the Golden Living Center in Maryville on January 20, 2013. Harold was born October 12, 1918, to Henry and Agnes (Pestotnik) Shell, near Boone in a house located east of the Des Moines River where the original Lincoln Highway crossed. He was three years old when his parents moved to Boone. He grew up helping his folks with their Guernsey dairy herd and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1937, valedictorian of his class. Harold married Luella Mae Kirkendall on June 5, 1939, in Boone. In 1940, following the industrial movement, he moved his family to Los Angeles, California, where he worked for the Vega Aircraft Company. But farming was in his blood, so by the fall of 1943, they returned to Boone to again help his parents in the family business delivering milk to families in Boone. In 1945, information that the farm at 19th & Marion Street was available for rent with the possibility of ownership sparked his desire to step out on his own, a decision that propelled a dream into reality. And for the next 60 years he lived his dream, farming the land, building a Holstein dairy business and making a home for his family. In 1972, another long-held idea was consummated with the opening of Ski Valley, a recreational skiing facility he and Luella built and operated as a family business with help from children and grandchildren. The enterprise grew over the years in response to customer demands and was operated by the Schell family until 1996. The business was subsequently sold and renamed Seven Oaks. Harold enjoyed family gatherings, large or small with his children, grandchildren, extended relatives, and friends. Their home was always open for company and you could expect them to reciprocate your visit. Over the years, when they traveled across the country on sightseeing vacations, through 49 of the states, they always included stops to visit family and friends en route to and within their destinations. His later years were plagued with Alzheimer's disease, which forced his relocation to Maryville where he lived under the watchful eye of his daughter, Rose Marie, for two years before moving into the Golden Living Center. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella; infant sisters Mary Anne and Ana Mae Schell; sister Genevieve Headlee; a great granddaughter; and a daughter-in-law, Jeary Wood. Harold is survived by four children, Harold "Bill" (Betty) Schell, Washburn, Wisconsin, Rose Marie "Ree" Greenfield, Maryville, Missouri, Rex (LouAnn) Schell, Boone, and Catherine "Cathy" (David) Good, Polk City; a sister, Irene Simonson of Madrid; thirteen grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. In memory of Harold, memorials may be directed to the Church of the Sacred Heart. His body has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be Thursday, February 7, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. His cremains will be buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall is in charge of the arrangements.
