On November 4, 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Force where he... Read More	Harold Joy Martin was born to Albert Avery Martin and Gladys Joy Martin on September 27, 1922, at Fairmont. He passed away June 27, 2002, at the York General Hospital in York at the age of 79 years and nine months. Harold was the only child in the family. He grew up in Fairmont, graduating from Fairmont High School in 1940. On June 6, 1942, he was married to Nellie Jean Atwood of Fairmont. Two daughters were born to this marriage. On November 4, 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Force where he served in the 643rd Bombardment Squadron until his discharge on October 24, 1945. He returned to Nebraska and in 1947, was employed by Standard Brands, Inc. of York. He was manager until the business closed in 1971. He then became a shareholder and officer in the York State Bank and York Cold Storage. He served on the Board of Directors for both businesses until his retirement in 1987. Following retirement, Harold and Nellie Jean spent time traveling in their motor home and wintering in Arizona. He enjoyed the many friends and acquaintances he met through business and travel. Harold was a member of the Fairmont Community Church; Geneva V.F.W.; Cruisin Sports of Colorado; 50-year member of the York American Legion; Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge. While he and Nellie Jean lived in York, he served on the York City Council and the Board of Trustees for the Methodist church. His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Jean of Fairmont; two daughters, Jean Dowden of Sarasota, Florida and Joyce Holden and husband, Tim, of Willis, Texas; sister-in-law, Mable Isabella Moser and husband, Bill of Friend; four granddaughters, Shelley, Julie, Molly and Laurie and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont on Monday, July 1 by Rev. Betsy Galloway-Carew. Music was provided by Nancy Jo Galusha. Casket bearers were Stanley Allgood, Adam Broughton, Bill Jacobsen, Francis Jacobsen, Steve Rasmussen and Jon Strong.
