Harold gave "that last full measure of devotion" and it is fitting, and proper that a record of his life and gallant death be recorded here. Harold LeRoy Ayers, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ayers of Coon Rapids, was born in Ringgold county, Iowa, August 25, 1917, and was killed in action in Germany Dec. 12, 1944, at the age of 27 years, three months and seventeen days. He spent his early life near Diagonal and Creston and at the age of eight moved with his parents to the Carrollton community and later nearer Coon Rapids where he grew up and attended the public schools. Harold worked as a farmer and later was employed by the Pioneer Seed Co. here. For a while he operated a filling station at Carroll for the Turner Oil Co. While at Carroll he met Delores Carlson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Carlson of Carroll, and they were married, Jan. 6, 1941. For a while he worked at the carpenter trade in western Iowa and Nebraska but was employed at the Martin Bomber Plant at Omaha when he joined the Army. He was inducted into the service from Carroll county March 13, 1943, and received his initial training at Camp Butner, North Carolina. A member of the 329th Infantry, 78th Lightning Division, he had been overseas approximately eight months and has seen considerable campaigning before his death. Good natured and of a cheerful disposition Harold was a loving husband, son and brother and had a host of friends. He gave his life for a country beloved and for principles in which he firmly believed. Left to mourn his untimely death are his wife, Delores, of Madison, Nebraska, his mother and father of Coon Rapids; sisters, Mrs. Charles Stewart (Anna) of Perry, Mrs. Merle Moreland (May) of Leon, Mrs. Myron Gilley (Marjorie) of Ogden, and Myrtle at home; and brothers, Fred of Guthrie Center, Mart of St. Charles, Walter of Richmond, Calif., and Frank of Jefferson. A sister, Sadie, preceded him in death. Harold will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond, and by his other relatives and friends. His kindness and glad service to others will always be a bright spot in their memories.
