He was born May 21, 1916, in Ottumwa to Benjamin Harrison and Mabel Lillis Phillips Goodwin. He married Vera Evelyn Cohagan July 22, 1936. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1999. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he worked for Lowenberg Bakery for 41 years, retiring as purchasing agent in 1979. He served in the Army with the 42nd Division during World War II. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Disabled American Veterans and American Ex-Prisoners of War. Surviving are four sons, Dr. Gary Goodwin of Fort Worth, Texas, Roger and Dr. Max Goodwin, both of Bettendorf, and John Goodwin of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marian Mills of Branford, Fla.; and a brother, Gene Goodwin of Hot Springs, Ark. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Reece Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Grove officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion. Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. today in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Amy Kercho, Deanna Schupp, Scott, Chris, Joe, Andrew & Sarah Goodwin. Memorials may be made to Church of the Brethren.
