Description	:	Harold R. Porter was born November 11, 1925 at Norden, NE, to Harold Ray Porter Sr. and Lucy Pearl Elliott Porter. At the age of 3, he and his family moved to a farm south of Eagle, NE. He received his elementary education from rural schools surrounding his home and was a 1943 graduate of Eagle High School. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. Porter was born November 11, 1925 at Norden, NE, to Harold Ray Porter Sr. and Lucy Pearl Elliott Porter. At the age of 3, he and his family moved to a farm south of Eagle, NE. He received his elementary education from rural schools surrounding his home and was a 1943 graduate of Eagle High School. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served on the USS Little Rock as a Yeoman second class during the goodwill ambassador tour of the South American counties during and after World War II. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History Education. He received his Masters of Arts in Secondary Education Administration from the University of Nebraska in 1951. On June 2, 1948, Harold was united in marriage to Bonnie June Van Cleef of Chester, NE, and to this union three sons were born, Alan, Warren and Timothy. Harold was interested in his community, home and family. He enjoyed working with and for people. He was very interested in the success of his community, family and friends. A good portion of his life was spent enjoying history, travel and geography of Nebraska and the United States. Harold taught school and coached in Seward and Sutton, NE, and served as School District Superintendent in Dorchester and Franklin, NE. He devoted 43 years to the insurance and banking business. He worked for Rain and Hail Insurance Service as an adjuster and special agent for 23 years. Harold served as president and chairman of the board of directors of the State Bank of Chester until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the State Bank of Chester for 38 years. Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church of Chester, NE. Head has served on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Independent Bankers Association and First National Life Insurance Company. He was a past member of the Chester Village Board, serving as mayor for one term. He was one of the organizers of the Chester Scout program. For 38 years he was a member of the Chester community Club holding every office in the club. He was a member of the Hubbell American Legion Post #317 of Hubbell, NE, Deshler VFW Post #11010 of Deshler, NE, the Nebraska Historical Society and was recently inducted into the Nebraska Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame, and Pan American Highway Association. Harold passed away on December 14, 1995 at the age of 70 years, one month and three days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold R. Porter Sr. and Lucy Pearl Porter. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie J. Porter, Chester; three sons, Alan Porter and his wife Susan, Chester, Warren Porter of Houston, TX, and Timothy Porter and his wife Janell of Olathe, KS; five grandchildren, Angela, Mick and Anthony Porter, Chester, and Benjamin and Jacob Porter, Olathe, KS; two brothers, Ronald Porter, Buckley, WA, and Bernard Porter, Los Gatos, CA; three sisters, Maxine Dowding, Palmyra, NE, Janice West, Omaha and Aldine Turner, Lincoln; nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday, December 19, 1995 at United Methodist Church in Chester, NE, conducted by Rev. T.J. Fraser. Organist was Mrs. Dolan Frye and soloist Kenneth Hoge. Casket bearers were Jack Long, Max Derowitsch, Wes Rieke, Todd Heinrichs, Reuben Schleifer and Ron Mumm. Honorary casket bearers were Ernest P. Dunn, Neal Eickman, Don Wassom, Clayton Fies, James R. Kenner and Egbert Tietjen. Interment as made in the Chester Cemetery, Chester, Nebraska.
