He loved working his vegetable garden and tending to his asparagus and rhubarb patches which his wife Mary made delicious rhubarb pies from. Married November 2, 1940 LaPorte, La Porte, IN The first time we communicated across the fence was when he had to "literally" pull my stuck head out of the fence. Being a little kid, I thought it was big enough. Since Mary was busy working on one of her many community projects I gravitated towards following Harold around, looking over his shoulder or by his side when he was working on one of his own projects. He built a ladder for me when he noticed one day I liked climbing his tree and sitting for a spell. I shared in his many chores of seeding the lawn, setting the gopher traps or weeding and harvesting his garden. I went with him on several occasions to the New Carlisle Golf Course where he would sit and visit with friends while I drank my iced tea and poured lemon packets straight down my throat. It was quite a treat for me! He told great stories and jokes. I remember one time he had a friend or relative over to the house and the poor man had only one leg. As a little kid, we don't mind bluntly asking how it happened so I did. Harold tells me a story about the man being a butcher and one day while chopping meat he accidentally chops off his own leg. He said while the man was waiting for an ambulance he had to stand on his head and he gave a little wink ;) I was slow...it took me a while to figure out he was "pulling my leg!" He was the best, most loving man, friend and neighbor a girl could ever hope for.
