Washburn of Villisca died suddenly Saturday afternoon as the result of an overdoes of medicine which he had secured to quiet his nerves. He had been in a melancholy mood since his return here five months ago from Thermopolis, Wyoming, where he had been employed as a barber for a year and a half. His wife, who accompanied him to Thermopolis, did not come here with him, and he brooded much over the fact that he could not induce her to return here. Saturday afternoon he came down town and secured a two ounce bottle nearly full of a solution containing chloral hydrate, which he had used before, but instead of taking a spoonful, constituting a dose of fifteen grains, according to directions, he drank the entire contents of the bottle, 180 grains in all. This stupified him and remained down town in a dazed condition for a time, starting home about 5:45 o’clock. He was able to walk only as far as the west door of the Wallace Printing Company office on Fourth Street when he fell against the wall and sank to his knees. He managed to rise again, but as soon as he reached a standing position, he fell forward on his face on the sidewalk Serval persons rushed to his assistance and found him unconscious and he was bleeding from his nose which hit the walk violently in the fall. He was taken in the H. T. Bunker delivery car to the home of his parents in the northwest part of the city, but was dead by the time he reached there. Coroner Walter Sellergren of Red Oak was notified of the death and came over Saturday evening but he did not consider it necessary to hold an inquest. He attributed the death to an overdose of medicine. A few weeks ago MR. Washburn took an overdose of a sedative which he had secured to quiet his nerves, but on that occasion he reached home before he became unconscious. He quickly fell into a deep stupor, however, but an emetic was forced down him and his life was saves. Harold Riley Washburn was born in Blackhawk County, Iowa on October 5, 1895. He was married to Miss Eva Hatfield of Corning on June 18, 1918. He was employed as a barber in some of the shops in Villisca at various times and went to Thermopolis about eighteen months ago where he worked at his trade until his return to Villisca about the middle of June. Besides his parents, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Don Driskill of Morton Mills. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Presbyterian Church with Dr. A. P. Walton in charge of the service. The pall bearers were H. H. Nordyke, Crawford Sawyer, Clifford Brewster, Donald Stickler, Frank Umpress, and Basil Kunce. The singing was by J. H. Todd, H. H. Nordyke, F. L. Gerlach, and H. D. Peckham and interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. Riley Washburn of Thermonpolis, Wyoming and Mrs. Evelyn Toil of Basset, Nebraska.
