Description	:	Harriet Adel Ballinger (Dot) was the daughter of Thomas Edward Ballinger (1845-March 26, 1925) and Julia Holland Ballinger (d. June 24, 1917). She had two sisters, Emma Grace Ballinger (January 5, 1884-July 7, 1966), and Marie Ballinger (Dec. 29, 1879- 1949), and two brothers, John Ralph Ballinger (Apr.9 1875- 1943)and Thomas Edward (Ned) Ballinger (1889-January 5,1961). Read More	Harriet Adel Ballinger (Dot) was the daughter of Thomas Edward Ballinger (1845-March 26, 1925) and Julia Holland Ballinger (d. June 24, 1917). She had two sisters, Emma Grace Ballinger (January 5, 1884-July 7, 1966), and Marie Ballinger (Dec. 29, 1879- 1949), and two brothers, John Ralph Ballinger (Apr.9 1875- 1943)and Thomas Edward (Ned) Ballinger (1889-January 5,1961). Dot was the beloved aunt to Emma Grace's three boys, John Ballinger Coleman, James Henry Coleman, and Jean Wilfred Coleman who loved Aunt Dot's famous Red Velvet Cake. She spent most of her life as a spinster, caring for her mother, her father, and her brother Ralph until they died. After her father's death, Dot rented out two spare bedrooms to teachers and other working women, "and provided a prized table by being a great cook." In 1936, she met and married Firm Miller in Atchison, and they lived in that same Ballinger family home at 210 N. 11th Street, up the hill next door to Emma Grace's home. Mr. Miller, her beloved "hubby," preceded her in death, November 29, 1947. Dot said the years of her marriage were the happiest of her life. Since Dot had cared for ill and dying family members, she worried that she herself might become dependent or a burden to anyone. Her nephew, John (Emma's eldest son), recalls that Dot came up to him, one day, and grinning said: "When I die, I want you to bury me in a white dress. Will you buy it for me?" John, a successful physician who loved her dearly, replied that he most certainly would buy her a lovely white dress. A few years after that, Grace entered Dot's house and found her lying on the floor of her bedroom. She was dressed to go downtown. Dot died in Grace's arms. She was 76 years old. She is buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery among the family she loved and served so well.
