She was a good scholar and graduated from the Atchison Business College, unusual for a woman of her time. She got a job in business, also unusual for a woman at the turn of the 20th century. Grace was courted by two men and chose a newspaperman who was business manager and editor of the Atchison Daily Globe. She married John Walker "Jack" Coleman in Atchison, Kansas, June 3, 1912. Jack was a widower with four children: Mary Martha, LaVinia, Ruth, and Walker Coleman. Jack and Grace then had children of their own in rapid succession: John Ballinger Coleman, born June 14, 1914, and James Henry Coleman, born November 3, 1915. Grace was pregnant with their third son, Jean Wilfred Coleman, when Jack Coleman died suddenly of meningitis after four years of marriage, on November 14, 1916. His death was attributed to the beginning of the great flu epidemic that killed thousands of Americans. Jack was only 46. Strangely enough, Jack's older brother had also died of meningitis when only 36 years of age. Son Jean was born January 9, 1917, two months after Jack's death. Since Jack died intestate, his estate and that of his wealthy first wife were divided among his four older children. Grace faced dire financial circumstances, and her father and beloved sister "Dot" stepped in to help support and care for Grace and her children. In nine short years, Grace had gone from the farm to a job, to marriage, to widowhood, to the care of seven children. During the hard times, Grace became an excellent businesswoman, carefully retaining and making payments on Jefferson and Atchison County land that she valued highly. Nine years after Jack's death, she married the second of her original suitors, Jay Dwight Adams, the owner of an Atchison insurance firm. Together they were parents to Grace's growing sons. The children from Jack's first marriage were already out on their own. Jay was a strong and loving father. Both Grace and Jay had keen senses of humor. Grace always had a joke to tell people. She loved to play cards and go to parties, loved music, played the piano, and both Grace and Jay sang in the church choir. When Jay Adams died in 1953, Grace was 70 years old. She quickly learned to drive a car, got her driver's license, and enjoyed the freedom to travel around visiting family and friends. Grace died July 5, 1966, mourned and missed by her family and community. As her eldest son, John, wrote: "Of material things, she left one piece of land in Jefferson County, another near the old family farm, the house at 1033 Kansas Avenue, a Nash car, and money in the bank.
