She was the only child of Thomas and Marcia Miller Wilder and was a direct descendant of Henry Dunster. She was the only child of Thomas and Marcia Miller Wilder and was a direct descendant of Henry Dunster. According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, "Henry Dunster, c. 1612-1659, first president of Harvard College, b. Lancashire, England, educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge (M. A. 1634). He emigrated to New England in 1640 and was almost at once (Aug 27, 1640) appointed president of the new college. He formulated its rules and patterned its procedures after the English schools, worked actively for its support, and gave freely of his meager salary for its success. Because of his adoption of Baptist principles he was forced to resign in 1654, and he spent the remainder of his life as a pastor in Scotiate, Mass..." Grandma Coughlan, as we knew her, had been married to Robert Arthur who was born in 1831 in Scotland. They had six children: Jennie, Frank, Earnest, George, Robert and Alice (my grandmother). Robert Arthur was a farmer and he died of diabetes in 1865, the year Alice was born. She then married Lemuel Coughlan, and they brought the children west to East.of Des Moines where he already owned a farm. According to the Portrait and Biographical Album...the mother of his (Lemuel's) wife was living with "Lemuel and Eliza and that she was seventy-five years old and came from a family whose members enjoyed very long lives. Grandma Coughlin was eighty-nine when she died. As I said in my chapter on Father, he was born in that Lemuel Coughlan farmhouse which is now in-Des Moines at East 29th and Euclid. He drove me out there to see it once, and it still looked good. I was only ten years old when Grandma Coughlin died, and she had been a widow for some time. I do remember her well though. I can see her rocking on Baba's front porch and eying our halfsocks. In her Vermont accent she would say, "I don't like bayeh legs!" She thought legs should be completely covered even on little children. She always had to have green tea with her "vittles". Once when she was visiting our family, Mother ran out of tea. We had had spinach for dinner, and Father suggested they give her some water drained from the spinach. When he asked her if her tea was all right, she said "Ayeh." Sometimes she used to take Ellen Dale and me up to her room and there she would get down from her closet shelf a can of maple sugar. She would give each of us a spoonful as a special treat. It seems to me she would heat the sugar some way. I guess her relatives back in Vermont kept her supplied. Father told about visiting the Vermont relatives when he was a little boy. He watched them collect the sap from the trees and process it. He said there were many tubs of sugar, and they assigned one of them to him saying he could eat all of it he wanted. He didn't make much of a dent. Mother and Father found the old Arthur house in Vermont, and Lafe and Char saw it too and took pictures of it. Leighton and I drove through that area one year and discovered that Dummerston is not really a town but is called a "townstead," as I remember. The East Des Moines farmhouse was the site of many family gatherings when Father was a boy. They spent Christmases and Thanksgivings there. The young cousins had a separate table from - - the grown-ups and had a lively time eating the turkey, scalloped oysters, and all the other good things Grandma Coughlan and the aunts had prepared. It was somewhat different from the skimpy meals Grandma Coughlan had to get by on in Vermont, sometimes having only "hasty pudding" and nothing else. I think that was a sort of corn-meal mush. She became senile in her last years. I think it started when she came to visit us that time. When it was time for her to go back to Baba in Sioux City, Mother and Father put her on the sleeper that sat on the tracks as they did with Ellen Dale and me later. They saw her settled then went back home. Sometime later they received a call from the police who said they had found an elderly woman wandering on the railroad tracks in her night clothes. Somehow they had learned she was of their family. After they went down to the station and picked her up, they realized that she would have to be escorted home. After that she had to be taken care of like a child, which must have been very difficult for Baba and Dad. They kept her until the job became impossible and then took her to the Cherokee mental hospital for the short time she had left. There were no nursing homes or custodial institutions in those days. She was 89 when she died. ~ Harriet died at the Cherokee Mental Institute in Cherokee IA.
