Hawk, died in Kingman, Kansas, last Thursday, March 21st, 1912, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. B. Richmond. Funeral services were held Friday, the 22nd, at the M. E. church at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. H. Moore, interment being at Walnut Hill cemetery. Deceased was one of the pioneers of Kingman county, having settled in Richland township on the southwest quarter of section 10, in the year '78. Hawk schoolhouse being situated on the land formerly occupied by them and named in honor of the family. She and her husband remained in this county some ten years, when they moved to the Pacific coast and later to Illinois, where her husband died some seventeen years ago. Since the death of her husband she has made her home with the family of her daughter, Mrs. W. B. Richmond, for the most of the time, coming with her to Kingman a few months ago. Deceased had other relatives in this county, among the number being her sister, Mrs. F. F. Furry, of the First ward. Hattie Smith, the subject of this sketch was born in the state of Ohio, on the 3rd day of July, 1828. She was joined in marriage, with Abel M. Hawk on the 10th day of February, 1848, in Indiana. From that state they moved to Illinois, and from there to Kingman county, Kansas, arriving here in the year 1878, and here underwent the privations incident to a life on the frontier for some ten years, after which they made their home elsewhere until recently, when she came back and here closed her life's labors, at a ripe old age.
