Ayres was born in Bedford county, Tenn., July 19, 1823, where she lived until she married J. M. Holt Nov. 19, 1840. In 1850 the family moved to Clay county, Mo., where they lived until 1856 when Nodaway county was selected for the future home. Here the deceased remained till death "loosed the silver cord," the 4th inst, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 15 days. Her husband died 7 years ago and since then she has made her home with her son, A. J. Holt, 5 miles east of Quitman, Mo. When Mr. and Mrs. Holt reached this county the country was sparsely settled, and they purchased a quarter section (just east of Quitman) of this government land at $1.25 an acre, and the government warrants are still among the heirlooms of the family. The man of the house with his trusty rifle kept the larder well supplied with choice venison, as well as protecting human lives and stock from the ravage of the timber wolves. She early in life professed her faith in Christ, remaining a member of the Baptist church till in the summer of 1875, when she united with the Christian church of Quitman, where she held membership at the time of her death. She was the mother of ten children, seven boys and three girls; the grandmother of 53 children, great-grandmother of 36 children. Six children survive her: J. W. Holt, Maryville, Mo.; Alex Holt, Carpenter, Wyo.; Mrs. J. B. Russell, Esterline, Texas; G. M. Holt, Elida, New Mexico; L. B. Holt of Maryville and A. J. Holt of near Quitman, Mo. Hers was an active and persistent life, filled with energy and ambition. She toiled early, long and late for those whom she loved, and dying has left an example worthy of our imitation. Her sudden death was caused probably by the fact that medical attendance could not be got for her, because of the roads being badly drifted with snow. Over 30 men were shoveling snow between the home and Quitman before the cemetery could be reached. A short funeral service in charge of Elder S. D. Harlan was held at the home, Thursday, March 7, 1912 at 10 a.m .and the body laid to rest at Quitman." Other children: Mary (1840 -) and Phoebe (1846 -) died as infants.
