From "History of Nodaway County, Missouri" 1882 J. M. Holt Farmer and stock raiser, section 10, was born in Bedford County, Tenn., May 24, 1819, and is a son of John and Elizabeth Holt. His father was a native of Ireland, and his mother of North Carolina. They were married in 1815, and then became residents of Bedford County, Tennessee. There the senior Holt died. In 1850, the subject of this sketch, with his mother, moved to Clay County, Missouri, and in 1855 to Nodaway County, Missouri, settling where he now resides. He was married the 19th of November, 1840 to Miss Harriet J. Ayers, a native of Bedford County Tennessee. She was born July 19, 1823, and was a daughter of Moses and Mary Ayers, natives of Georgia. Mr. And Mrs. Holt have seven children living: Moses H., Alexander, John W., Elgivia, George M., L. R. and A. J. They have lost three: Mary, William J. and Phebe J. Both Mr. And Mrs. H. are members of the Christian Church. He is a member of Quitman Lodge, No 196, of the Masonic Fraternity, and one of the leading citizens of Green Township. In 1861 he enlisted in Capt. McQuittie's company under Gen. Price, and was in service till July, 1862. He was once arrested for treason, but was afterwards discharged. From the Civil War & Nodaway County by Martha Cooper Holt, Jackson M. Confederate. Nodaway. Born 24 May 1819 in Bedford Co, Tennessee. Came to Clay County, MO with mother and then to Nodaway County in 1855. In 1861 enlisted in Capt. McQuiddy's company under Gen. Price and was in service until July 1862. He was once arrested for treason but afterwards discharged. Farmer. (BHNA, 1901, p. 473). In 1861 Thomas J. McQuiddy raised a company of 100 Cavalry, men were organized and drilled at Graham where McQuiddy was chosen captain. Rev. Renfro was 1st Lt. And J.M. Jack was 2nd Lt. They later joined Price; Jack served for 10 months for the Confederates. (Nod Dem. 30 July 1885). 2nd Lt. In Capt. Burns' Co. B, 3rd MO Cavalry, CSA age 40. Had served in MO State Guards, 5th Reg. 5th Div. Battles: Blue Mills, Lexington, Sugar Creek, Elkhorn, Farmington; transferred to Trans-Mississippi May 1862. Native of Bedford Co. TN; residence Nodaway Co. MO (MO Archives, roster). May 1, 1865, Book C, Circuit Court, appearance bond of $2000 posted. October term, 1866, State of Missouri, charge of treason against Jackson M. Holt, cause is dismissed. (Book C, P. 133), Circuit Court Minutes). Died 11 Sept 1904 age 83, at Quitman. Farmer. He was a soldier in the Confederate army serving one year under Gen. Price in the early stage of the conflict. (Rep 15 Sept 1904) Other children: Mary (1840 -) and Phoebe (1846 -) died as infants.
