Sister of Mary (married Felix Fountain) and William J. Starks. Obituary - Mrs. Harriet M. Hawes, wife of the late Lucius A. Hawes, and one of Poultney's old residents, died Thursday afternoon, January 5, of a complication of diseases. Mrs. Hawes was born at Hobart, N.Y., October 3, 1835, the daughter of the Rev. Desevignia Starks and Harriet Andrews. She graduated at the Troy Conference academy in the class of 1855, and was one of the oldest alumni of that institution. She was married to Lucius A. Hawes April 30, 1867, and has since resided in this place at the house on College street which has been the Hawes family home for over half a century. Mrs. Hawes was a woman of genial temperament and kindly disposition, qualities which greatly endeared her to a large circle of friends. Born and reared in an atmosphere of Methodism she remained firm in upholding the best traditions of her church and during the years her activity was counted among the workers of the Methodist Church in this place, of which she had been a member since coming to Poultney. She is survived by two sons, William S. and Fred E. Hawes, and one daughter, Hattie E. Hawes. The funeral services were held at the late residence of the deceased, Sunday afternoon. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. The bearers were: J.W. Ripley, C.F. Harris, C.C. Loomis, A.E. Cushman, C.E. Porter, and E. Hawkins. The services were conducted by Rev. J.B. Horton assisted by Dr. C.H. Dunton. Mr. Horton's remarks were very tender and appropriate, closing with a recital of the "Crossing of the Bar." Dr. Dunton's address is given below. "One of the first homes whose door was thrown open to us, when Mrs. Dunton and I , 36 years ago, came to reside in Poultney, was that of the Hawes. And this was an interesting household. The family was composed of the deceased, her husband, Lucius A. Hawes, three children and the father and mother of Mr. Hawes, old and highly esteemed residents of Poultney. Mr. Hawes was a thrifty business man but he did not allow the shop to eclipse the home. He took time for the enjoyment of his family and friends. The social occasions enjoyed at this house were always recalled with pleasure. The host was assiduous and tactful in his attention to his guests, the children rained to observe the proprieties of the occasion and of their years, the grandfather and grandmother though sitting in the twilight glow of old age wore faces illumed with the light of the after-glow. And the hostess modestly but with well grounded assurance filled her difficult role. While Mrs. Hawes had no quarrel with others as to woman's sphere, she felt that for herself the rewards of homemaker were the most attractive. And to that home she gave the labors of her life. And in this choice of a sphere she did not throw away the culture acquired at much cost. For where are the requirements greater if the largest success is to be looked for? Who more than the wife and mother needs the cultivated intellect, refined sensibilities, a will under control, and all these acquisitions imbued with the Christly spirit? Her early training could have hardly been better directed to qualify her for her career. Born in a parish parsonage, three months later baptized at a watchnight service, graduated from our conference seminary, and married from a district parsonage, she came with an unusual preparation to her sacred duty as priestess of the panates. Four years after my introduction to the family three graves in yon cemetery were required for its dead. The father-in-law, the mother-in-law, and the husband were taken and all within the space of a few months. The resulting business responsibilities and the care of three young fatherless children thrust upon the widow a situation that to her retiring and conscientious spirit was distressing. But the wealth of her unsuspected resources, discovered itself in the quiet and modest but successful solution of the difficult problems that fronted her. And when a little later her father and mother, the Reverend Dr. Desevignia Starks and wife, needed a home and support, because of retirement from the pastorate, they were welcomed to her home and kindly cared for to the end. Dr. Starks had been a prominent member of the Troy Conference. Again and again he had represented it in the General Conference of the church. He had served several districts as presiding elder. And no expression of the confidence and esteem of his brethren had been denied him. To such a one retirement and residence in a rural village brought a change of surroundings sharply contrasted with earlier circumstances. And the dutiful daughter strove to leave nothing in her power undone that would help him forget what had been lost. Dr. Starks used frequently to speak to me with deep feeling of the extraordinary kindness of his daughter. It is very gratifying to her friends to know that she in her turn has, when the time of need came, been the recipient of like kindness and thoughtful attentions. The deceased was never forward in church work or demonstrative in her religious life. But all this was impossible to one of her temperament. That she felt a genuine interest in the prosperity of Christ's kingdom and that her life was permeated with the Christly spirit no one who knew her ever doubted. While in this farewell service we regret that another link with the pleasant past has been severed we must rejoice that a new attraction has been added to that world out of sight where the decrepitudes of old age are exchanged for the bloom and joyousness of eternal youth. We will think of her as developing to perfection there the lovable qualities that were most characteristic of her here.
