Hawes, aged 12, was living in Poultney, Rutland, Vermont, in the home of his parents, Elijah Hawes, aged 39, a farmer, and Eliza Hawes, aged 40, with sister, Martha Hawes, aged 1, and Sarah Horr, aged 43. In 1860, Lucius Hawes, aged 22, a student, was living in Poultney, Vermont, with his parents, Elijah Hawes, aged 49, and Eliza Hawes, aged 50, a farmer, with Mary Hawes, aged 5, Sarah Horr, aged 52, a domestic, John Grant, aged 16, a farm laborer, Daniel Culver, aged 40, a butcher, and David Horr, aged 89. In 1870, Lucius Hawes, aged 32, a jeweller, was living in Poultney, Vermont, with his wife, Martha Hawes, aged 33, in the home of his parents, Elijah Hawes, aged 59, a farmer, and Eliza Hawes, aged 60, with Mary Hawes, aged 15, Stella Nunson, aged 21, Sarah Horr, aged 62, and William Hawes, aged 2. Both of his parents died before him in 1878. Obituary - Lucius A. Hawes died at his residence in this village on Tuesday evening, October 1st, 1878. He was a son of the late Elijah Hawes, and was born October 12, 1837. A few days more would have brought him up to the age of 41 years. Mr. Hawes never had a very strong constitution, and his severe injury some five years ago, when a passenger on the R. & W. Railroad, probably hastened his end. For the last year, he had been slowly and steadily failing - himself and his friends knowing that a disease was upon him which must end in his death, though they were not expecting it quite as soon as it came. The people of Poultney will feel this loss. Ten or eleven years ago had established him in a good business, (the jewelry business), and in that time he had gained a public confidence as a fair, upright and competent dealer. But the loss will be more severely felt will be that of a widow and three small children, and this loss, no words of ours can adequately express. Elijah Hawes died March 16, 1878; in a few weeks after his widow died, and now Lucius A., the only son and survivor of Elijah Hawes' family has gone to his reward. Funeral services are to be held this (Friday) afternoon. Death Record - Lucius A.
