I was born in Warren Co, Missouri, in the year 1838. My family became residents of southern Michigan when I was about seven years old, and my early life was passed there. When quite young I began writing for different journals east and west. Those stories, sketches, and poems, reviewed later in years seem crude of course. I became known to Mrs. Mary A. Livermore then a resident of Chicago, and was connected with an organization known as the Sanitary Commission during the time of the Civil War, collecting money and supplies, and sending them to the Chicago office, to be forwarded to the soldiers wherever the need was the greatest. After the war and the death of my father and mother, life seemed to hold very little for me. So I [paper torn] ...going to New York City, where reverses and ruin came to me. This ruin was wrought through inexperience of the ways, and the life, of a large city. After a stay of nearly two years in New York, I returned to the West, thriving in different places but more recently in Chicago. --Harriet Bryan Evers Of my family I will speak of only one, my youngest and favorite brother. Joseph Reynolds was a soldier in the late civil war dying from the exposure to the hardships of a Southern prison in 1862. This prison was located at Macon Georgia. It was one of the most infamous of all the infamous places. May 14, 1908 Of my own life I do not care to speak in detail. It has been made of mistakes ruins and reverses. Born in Missouri early life spent in Michigan, a sensitive nervous organization, a romantic temperment -- a dreamer and a fool. Ancestry as far as I know -- two Irish grandfathers and two American grandmothers. My father's sire a pioneer resident of Kentucky. Old Anthony Reynolds, an orthodox Presbyterian I have heard with a large family with the usual names of Betsys and Margarets and Susans and Johns and James etc. My father -- George T. Reynolds being the youngest. The mother of them was Margaret Fleming -- a Virginia woman presumably of the pioneer type. So my father a Kentuckian by birth education and environment spent the early years of his life in Bourbon County where the meadow grass is blue. My mother, Rachel Bryan was by birth a Pennsylvanian, her father Michael Bryan being a resident there with a large family, and very little money. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, and his record both as a soldier and citizen good as tradition goes. My grandmother on my mother's side was born in New York City, and I know she was somewhat above average in education and talent, and also something of a classical student. I was seventeen years old at the time of her death. It was the first realization I had ever had of the horror and loss of relatives in that way. And it left much regret, and cast a gloom over my young life for a long time. My father and my mother lived a long life together, part of it in Louisiana but their closing years were spent in Berrien County, Mich. Our family does not appear to have been money-getters. The only one of all of them that was dear to me was my youngest brother who died a victim to the hardships and exposures of one of the foul prisons of the South located at Macon Georgia. He was Joseph Fleming Reynolds, a soldier in the 9th Michigan Infantry. He had all the daring, and talent and sentiment of the race in him.
