His parents had a desire to create a home for themselves in the wilderness so using a covered wagon they packed up their family and slowly moved from Jefferson County, New York to Michigan, probably via Canada where his youngest sibling was born in 1846. They arrived first in Saginaw in 1847 and shortly thereafter removed to the village of Portsmouth, Michigan (now Bay City).
