Description	:	Harry Burton Karnes, son of Jacob and Lucy Ann (Whitman) Karnes, passed away at the University Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 85 years and 20 days. He was the last of his family of five children. His siblings were: Thomas H., Charles S., Ella M., and Kitty M. Harry's family left Henry County, Illinois in 1879 and traveled by covered wagon to Saunders County, Nebraska. Read More	Harry Burton Karnes, son of Jacob and Lucy Ann (Whitman) Karnes, passed away at the University Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 85 years and 20 days. He was the last of his family of five children. His siblings were: Thomas H., Charles S., Ella M., and Kitty M. Harry's family left Henry County, Illinois in 1879 and traveled by covered wagon to Saunders County, Nebraska. In 1883, when Harry was 10 years old, the family moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded 160 areas east of Concord, Nebraska. He married Julia Josophine Batten, February 1, 1897 at Wayne, Nebraska. They were the parents of five children: Dea, Joe Leroy, Robert Forest, Ray Orie, and Ina Lydia (Fletcher, Rieth). The family farmed the above-mentioned land of his parents. Harry started four sons farming and his son-in-law, Edward Fletcher in the chicken and egg business. The farming operation consisted of milking cows, raising fat hogs, and chickens. The milk was separated and the cream shipped by rail from Dixon. Fat hogs were shipped by rail to the market at Sioux City, Ia. Eggs from the chickens were sold in Allen, Concord, and Dixon. The egg money, handled by Julia,was used for groceries, furniture, etc. Harry owned and operated a threshing machine for many years; would work with neighbors and thresh their grain. Harry and Julia's home was always open to friends and family. Many traveling salesmen would always be given a good home cooked meal and a place to sleep. They took in orphan children; fed and clothed them until they were able to do so themselves. The Karnes farm was also the site of mny barn dances over the years. (Information from grandson, Gene E. Fletcher) --------------------------------------- Harry's father lived with the family after the death of his wife, Lucy. Harry's sister, Kittie M. Lovell, died in 1894, leaving two children, Dessie A. and Elroy. They were listed on the 1900 census, living with Harry and Julia, as niece and nephew. ----------------------------------------- Excerpts from obituary: ........Funeral services will be at 2:20 p.m. Sunday at the First Lutheran church at Allen.....Rev. M. B. Simon will officiate and burial will be in the cemetery at Concord with the Wiltse funeral home of Laurel in charge.....
