Description	:	Jacob Walter Karnes married Lucy Ann Whitman in Venango County, Pennsylvania on Novermber 11, 1852. They were the parents of five children: Thomas H., Charles S., Harry B., Ella M., and Kitty M. They moved to Henry County, illinois in 1854 where they engaged in farming. In 1879, the family moved by covered wagon to Saunders County, Nebraska. In 1883, they moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded 160 acres east of Concord. In 1879, the family moved by covered wagon to Saunders County, Nebraska. In 1883, they moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded 160 acres east of Concord. Jacob traded 80 acres owned in Henry County, Illinois to the Burlington Railroad for this 160 acres in Dixon County, Nebraska. The family lived in the covered wagon while the ground was broken up for planting. A barn was built for the oxen and other livestock. Later a lean-to shelter was built; then the next summer a house was constructed. The lumber was hauled from Wakefield for the house and barn. After his wife's death, Jacob made his home with Harry B. and family, who was farming the homestead. (Information from great grandson, Gene E. Fletcher) _______________________________________________ Excerpts from obituary: Jacob Karnes, who has been poorly for several months, died last Thursday, death being from old age and paralysis. Mr. Karnes was on old and respected resident of this community and is another one of the pioneers to join the silent majority. Interment was made in the Concord cemetery Saturday, the remains followed to their last resting place by a large circle of friends and acqauaintances, an ample testimonial of the high esteem with which the deceased was held. ......aged 76 yrs., 3 mo., 16 da...five children: two of whom are dead, Ella M. and Mrs. Kittie M. Lowell...there are living three sons: Thomas H., Charles S. and Harry B......leaves three brothers in Pennsylvania...As a citizen, Mr. Karnes was quite unassuming but very highly respected and his simple honest straight forward life won to him the confidence of all who knew him. The funeral services were conducted at the house on the 9th of Feb. at ten o'clock. Rev. Moore of Allen preached the sermon....
