Dierks, who recently resided near Bryant, threw himself in front of the engine of a sand train one mile east of the Almont sand pit, and was literally cut in pieces. The train was in charge of Conductor John Whitson, with Engineer E. B. Russ and engine No. 678, and consisted of some twenty-seven flat cars which were being taken to the sand pit near Almont to be loaded. The engine was backing and the cars were hitched on from the pilot bar, and when within a mile of the pit two or three trainmen observed a man standing in a ditch about ten or twelve feet from the track. As the train approached the man started toward the track and when the engine was within fifteen feet of him he threw himself across the west rail. The horror-stricken trainmen at once used every effort to bring the train to a stop, but before they could do so some twenty cars had passed over the body, which was mangled out of nearly every semblance of a human being, the head alone escaping with scarcely a bruise. The body was at once brought to this city and removed to Janssen & Struve's undertaking rooms, where it was recognized as that of H. C. Dierks, of Bryant. Coroner C. W. Meyers took charge of the remains and empanelled a jury consisting of Charles C. Harroon, George Brenizer and A. J. Hayer, who after viewing the remains adjourned to Justice Brenizer's office, where the testimony of several witnesses was taken last evening; but the facts brought out are substantially as related above. The jury took an adjournment until this morning in order to examine two or three witnesses who were acquainted with the deceased. The deceased was a bachelor and about forty years of age. Recently his father sold a large farm near Bryant and removed to Mason City where he now resides with his aged wife. Dr. Meyers telegraphed the sad affair to the father of the deceased yesterday and asked for instructions as to the disposal of the remains. It is stated that the dead man was worth considerable property in his own name. Coroner's Verdict. The coroner's jury yesterday concluded its investigations regarding the death of the late H. C. Dierks and returned the following verdict: "We, the jury, find that the deceased came to his death by voluntarily throwing himself in front of the engine of the gravel train on the C&N.W. about three-quarters of a mile east of the Almont gravel pit, about 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday, with the evident intention of committing suicide, and that the casualty could not have been prevented by the trainmen." Two brothers of the deceased, Peter and John Dierks, arrived in the city Wednesday morning from Mason City and took charge of the remains, which were interred in the Dierk's cemetery near Lyons yesterday. The deceased had $1,000 on deposit in a bank in Lyons. Iowa Mirror, Saturday, October 3, 1891 DEATH ON THE TRACK (SHOULD READ HARRY AND NOT HANS DIERKS) Harry (not Hans) C. Dierks, a man of about forty years, committed suicide, Tuesday afternoon, by throwing himself under the wheels of the Midland gravel train, near the sand pit. He was a single man, living alone near Bryant, and said not to have been of sound mind; also that the refusal of a young lady to marry him some years ago affected his reason. The fatal act was undoubtedly deliberate and premeditated, as a note in his pocket showed. He had accumulated $1,000, for which he held a note, and which he wrote his father was to possess. The Coroner's Jury returned verdict of voluntary death. His remains were buried in the Dierk's cemetery.
