Word of the tragic death of the popular Napa man was received in a telephone message from Clyde Shively of Napa, who was a member of the outing party, which also included Ed Brown and F. Bourd of San Francisco. According to Shively's message, phoned to Mrs. Shively yesterday, Wood suffered a heart attack while driving his automobile and the car plunged over a steep grade. "Harry C. Wood Funeral Rites Here Tomorrow Napa Man on Fishing Trip to Klamath Lived 40 Minutes After Car Left Grade The body of Harry C. Wood, 64, retired Mare Island employe and prominent Napa resident who was fatally injured in an auto wreck on the Klamath river road Saturday, arrived at the Webber Funeral Parlors here today. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with burial to follow in Tulocay Cemetery. The accident occurred about 70 miles from Arcata. Fred Beard of San Francisco, who was riding with Mr. Wood, received a fractured leg and is in a hospital at Arcata. Clyde Shively and Edward Brown of Napa, others in the party on the fishing trip to the Klamath, returned here this afternoon in Brown's Car. MORE DETAILS RECEIVED. The tragic occurance came as the party had just arrived at the Klamath and was searching for a place to make camp. The following account which appeared in an Arcata newspaper, gives complete details of the accident: "Harry C. Wood of Napa was killed at 11 o'clock Saturday morning about 100 yards this side of the Martin's Ferry bridge across the Klamath river when the car he was driving plunged down the steep incline almost to the river. Fred Beard of San Francisco, who was riding with Wood, was severely injured. "Wood was driving down the road toward the bridge when he reached the short turn about 100 yards before reaching the bridge and his car suddenly went off the road, which is narrow at that point, precipitating both men to the depths below. INQUEST HELD. "The inquest over Wood was held by Justice of the Peace Thomas J. Ni, who found that the deceased came to his death by accidental means. It was developed at the inquest that Wood was subject to heart spells, and it is believed that he suffered from sudden pains in the heart which caused him to lose control of the machine. "Two other men were in the party, C. B. Shively and Edward Brown, both of Napa. They were in another car just ahead. "The precipice down to the river is so steep that the body of Wood was taken across the stream in a boat and down the river to Hoopa. He lived only about 40 minutes after he was reached. "Beard had one leg broken and suffered severe bruises, especially about the head. He said that Woot was driving slowly down the hill when the accident happened." The car was totally wrecked, according to reports received here. HERE MANY YEARS. Mr. Wood was a native of Fort Madison, Iowa, but he spent more than half a century in Napa county, coming here as a lad. He was raised near Yountville. For many years he was a steam engineer at Mare Island Navy Yard and of late he had been on the retired list. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Grace Wood, who passed away October 25, 1926, and the father of the late Mrs. Peggy Thompson, whose death came on June 7th last after a brief illness. Roy Thompson, the son-In-law, came here from Kings City to make the funeral arrangements for Mr. Wood. The deceased was a member of the Elks, Knights of Pythias and Pythian lodges in this city. He was widely known in this community and the announcement of the fatal accident caused deep sorrow among his many friends." - The Napa Daily Register (August 1, 1932) A book of Board Meeting Minutes from the George C. Yount Cemetery from July 1894 - January 1960, has provided some new information: In 1894 - One of the first officers of the Cemetery Board when he was elected Secretary July 1932 - He was a trustee (the meeting must have been just days before he died) In 1939 - They honor him as a Board of Trustee Member who has passed (it had been a few years since the last meeting)
