Harry was born February 19, 1920 in Omaha, NE to Frank Josef and Marie (Moravec) Babka. The youngest of ten children, "Babe" was proud of his Czechoslovakian heritage. Harry was born February 19, 1920 in Omaha, NE to Frank Josef and Marie (Moravec) Babka. The youngest of ten children, "Babe" was proud of his Czechoslovakian heritage. Harry was preceded in death by his first wife, Bette, in 1972, his 9 siblings, and a grandson-in-law, Johnny Hall An excellent student and draftsman, he worked for Swanson's Foods as a courier and graduated from South High School (Omaha) December, 1938. He married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Bette Navrisky, on June 28, 1941, in Omaha, NE. To this union two children were born, Suzanne Jo and James Vincent. Harry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre until 1946. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1947. In 1946, Harry went to work as an electrician for Ford Electric of Omaha. Becoming a Master Electrician, he then worked for Western Electric. In 1949, Harry was a Civil Service employee at Offutt AFB--Resident Engineer of Operations. During the "Blizzard of "49", he was involved in restoring electricity to Ellsworth AFB (Rapid City, SD) and Fort Farragut (Fargo, ND). In 1957, while at Offutt AFB, Harry began his successful career with the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 1960, he transferred to Cheyenne, WY, as Resident Engineer, overseeing the Atlas Missile program. Transferred to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, AZ, he supervised the Titan II Ballistic Construction. He also worked at Whiteman AFB, MO. (1964), Grand Forks, ND (1969) and Ellsworth AFB, SD (1970-74). He was the Resident Engineer for the construction of the U.S. Post Office in Rapid City, SD. Harry received several awards for Outstanding Service for National Defense during his long career with the Corps. He retired from the Corps in 1974, and later worked for Kurtz Construction of Rapid City. He married Sandra Destry in Las Vegas, NV, June 7, 1977. Harry was a congenial gentleman who lived for golf, Husker football, and shooting the breeze with his many friends. He could repair or build almost anything: designing and building a cabin while in his seventies. Harry was a member of the Elks—serving on the Expansion Committee—and the VFW, and the Eagles. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Rapid City; four step-children, Lyssa O'Boyle, Lequey, MO, Jean-Michel Destry, Sedro-Wooley, WA, Diana Destry, Gulfport, MS and Rosana Davison, Rapid City, SD; a daughter, Suzanne (George) Mores, Laramie, WY, and a son, James (Barbara) Babka, Plainview,Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bette, in 1973; his 9 siblings, and a grandson-in-law, Johnny Hall. Harry was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Michael (Dee) Mores, Athen and Nicolas, Cheyenne, WY; Michele Hall and Allie, Laramie, WY; K.George (Tiffany) Mores, Josie and Lindsay, Cheyenne, WY; Nicole (Scott) Meyer, Matthew and Madison, Edinburg, TX; James (Patricia) Babka, LeeAnn, Berthoud, CO; Josef D (Amanda) Babka, Savannah and Avery, Blue Eye, MO, several nieces, nephews, and a special nephew, Jon A. Nelson (Margaret) of Lincoln, NE. Memorial services with military honors by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 Honor Guard and the South Dakota National Guard will be 9:00 A.M. Monday, January 17 at Black Hills National Cemetery with Chaplain (Ret.) Herb B. Cleveland officiating. A memorial has been established to Disabled American Veteran's Chapter #3 at 101 East Madison Street, Rapid City, SD 57701.
