DARLING Harry Leroy Darling, the son of Grover and Mabel Darling was born April 6, 1913 in Wiota, Iowa and passed away April 11, 1978 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 65. On June 14, 1937 he was united in marriage to Ruth Lindell of Villisca, Iowa. Until 1943, they lived in Greenfield, Iowa where they owned and operated a restaurant. On June 14, 1937 he was united in marriage to Ruth Lindell of Villisca, Iowa. Until 1943, they lived in Greenfield, Iowa where they owned and operated a restaurant. In May of 1943, Harry was inducted into the Army at Camp Dodge, Iowa. His tour of active duty took him to Camp Stoneman, California; Ft. Lewis, Washington, Camp Edwards, Massachusetts; and finally Ft. Devans, Massachusetts where he was separated from active duty in March of 1946. During this period of Active service, he had several positions in the Quartermaster Corps and served as a member of the Cadre at two installations. Upon returning to Greenfield he joined the United States Reserve and served in many capacities to include First Sergeant of several of several Engineer Companies. His dream and desire to become a Sergeant Major came true in December of 1962. On April 6, 1973 Harry celebrated his 60th birthday and his 30th year of military service to his country. Harry received the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal and the Expert Rifleman's Badge. Harry's civilian career, after the war, was spent with the Iowa Soil Conservation Commission until his retirement in 1972. The Darlings lived in Greenfield until 1963 when they moved to Adel. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joe Darling. He is survived by his wife Ruth, one sister Mrs. MarceUa [sic] Hamann of Atlantic, Iowa; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Harry was a graduate of Wiota High School, attended college at Cedar Falls, was a member of the Order of Mason, the Soil Conservation Society and the United Methodist Church.
