Harry Louis Weis, son of Albert Paul Weis and Mary Katharine (Brosnahan), was born on June 10, 1932, on a farm near Afton, Ia. He was one of eight children; five boys and three girls. He attended kindergarten through 12th grade at the Arispe Consolidated School. He graduated with the class of 1950. Harry served in the United States Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean Conflict. While overseas, Harry was stationed in Salzburg, Austria, traveling to many areas such as Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Vienna and Austria. Following his honorable discharge, Harry returned to Afton where he continued to help his dad farm. Harry was united in marriage to Joanne Carol Blazek on April 27, 1957, at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton. This union was blessed with four children, LuAnn, Linda, Lana and Jerald. In 1956, Harry joined the Iowa State Patrol, which required a relocation any time he was promoted. Initially, Harry lived in Glenwood as a Road Trooper; then them moved to Ottumwa as Sgt. Assistant District Commander; he then moved to Davenport as Lt. District Commander. His final moved was to Des Moines as Captain in charge of Fleet and Supply and then Major as administrative officer and assistant to the Chief. After 34 years as an Iowa State Trooper, Harry retired in 1990. He then spent another 8 years as head of security for the U.S. Marshall's Office at the Federal Court House in Des Moines. While never making it to Alaska or Hawaii, Harry did travel to each of the lower 48 states. He also traveled to Canada and Nova Scotia. His most unique experience was riding in the Good Year Blimp. Harry was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Des Moines. Harry is survived by his children, LuAnn Weis (Jan L. Pewe) of Eldridge, Linda (Todd) Harrell of Randolph, N.J. and Jerry Weis (Carrie Eierman) of Norfolk, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Josh Gossman (Jess Ferrer) of Norman, Okla., Jacob Gossman (Jennifer Webb) of Aurora, Colo., Zachary Harrell, Dana Harrell and Alex Harrell, all of Randolph, N.J. and Emma Weis, Payton Weis and Grant Weis all of Norfolk, Neb.; one great-grandchild Lennan Gossman of Norman, Okla.; son-in-law Jeff Gossman of Austin, T.X.; brother Fritz (Lois) Weis; sister Regina Pettit; sister-in-law Kate Weis; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joanne in 2010, daughter Lana Gossman in 2018, grandson Jonathan Harrell in 1999, brothers, Edwin Weis, Pete (Ava Jean) Weis and Donald (Anna) Weis, sisters Frances (Angelo) Scrandoli and Patricia Weis.
