He and Roscoe Flora had stopped to shove poles out of the road that had fallen during the windstorm. The butt of a pole caughter in the ground, and Mr. West took hold of two wires to spread them and crawl through. The electricity held him fast to the wires, and when Mr. Flora reached to pull him away, he also was shocked. Flora grabbed a hand rope, tossed it about the stricken man and pulled him loose. West was gasping and Flora tried artificial respiration as he called for help. Carl Ulmer ws the first to arrive, and started to drive to town for a doctor, as the Ulmer phone line was out from the storm. In the meantime Homer Thomas came along and brought Mr. West to the office of Dr. Ira E. Perry, but he could not be revived. Coroner Todd Bender conducted an inquest Friday, and the verdict was accidental death from electrocution. A limb had blown across an electric line of the Northern Indiana Power compnay a short distance east of the covered bridge. The line, carrying 2,300 volts, had fallen on the elelphone wires. West and Flora had been sent to move a wire out of the road a mile east of Servia, a pole having blown over on Mrs. Raymond Schroll's car. She was unhurt and went to the William Schroll home for help . William Schroll tried to move the wires, he was cut on the lip. He came to North Manchest for treatment and the telelphone company was notitifid. West and Flora had made that repair and were returning to town when they noticed several polls down and the lines out in the road along the Carl Ulmer place. They stopped to push the poles out of the road until permanent repairs could be made. Fuses were all that saved other workmen of the telephone compnay from the same fate that came to West. They were repairing a cable at the corner of Mill and Main street, for the same lines connected with the cable. There are fuses where the overhead lines enter the cable at the edge of town, and those blew out and kept the current from entering the cable. Mr. West's real name was Harry Oren West, but he was generally known as "Jack". He was 27 years old and had spent most of his life in this locality. He married Miss Helen Hare, who survives, together with four chilrdren, Jerry, Doris, James and Jack, ranging in age from four to eight years old. The father, Hayes West is living, the mother , now Mrs. Maimie(sic) Carter, one sister, Mrs. Fred Kinzie of Warsaw, and four brothers, Paul, Fred, Glen and George West, all of North Manchester. The funeral was held at the Walnut Street Church of the Brethren Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Reb. H. L. Hartsough conducted the service and burial was in Oaklawn cemetery. The men employes(sic) of the telephone company acted as pall bearers and honorary pall bearers; while the lady employes were flowerbearers."
