The gun, in the hands of his hunting companion, Darwood {sic Derwood} Costello, was accidentally discharged when Costello slipped on the wet ground. The accident occurred along the Wapsie bottoms between 5 and 6 o'clock, about a mile from the Parson home. After the charge struck him, Parson is reported to have said, "Oh, you broke my arm!" After which he took a couple of steps and slumped to the ground. Costello hurried to the home of his parents, which was nearer than the Parson home, and called Mr. Parson on the phone. He then hurried back to the scene of the accident with a car. The youth is believed to have died while they were putting him in the car. The shot tore away part of his arm and bored a gaping hole in the lad's right side. The county coroner was called from New Hampton, but at this writing we do not have his report. The youth was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Parson. Besides his grief stricken parents he is survived by three sisters and a brother, Elma, Elsie, Eva and Roy. He has always lived in the Republic vicinity, where he was born Jan. 27, 1913. Costello is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Costello, who had a son accidentally shot 8 or 10 years ago. Funeral services will be conducted at the Federated church at Republic, at 1:30pm today (Wednesday). Burial will be in the Richland cemetery at Republic.
