Cleveland was born May 12, 1849 In Jefferson, New York, and passed to the great beyond November 9th, 1917, aged 68 years, 5 months and 27 days. He died in his automobile two miles north of his beloved homestead. All indications point to an instantaneous death from apoplexy. His early life was spent in New York but being of a progressive disposition, came west and in the spring of 1871 filed on the homestead which has since been his home. He died in his automobile two miles north of his beloved homestead. All indications point to an instantaneous death from apoplexy. His early life was spent in New York but being of a progressive disposition, came west and in the spring of 1871 filed on the homestead which has since been his home. In the year 1877 he was united in marriage to Marion E. Clemons. To this union five children were born; Porter, Avery, Sylvia, Lefie and Leonard. Porter and Leonard preceded him to the better land. He leaves to mourn their loss, a beloved wife and three children. Avery Cleveland, Mrs. Sylvia Morgan and Miss Lefia Cleveland of this place, two sisters, Mrs. Alice M. Hall, of New Auburn, Minn., and Mrs. Emma Rades, of Kennydale, Wash., a host of relatives and friends. His love for his country as exhibited in the Red Cross work and all other lines of patriotism was perhaps made the keener by the fact that his three brothers, Major Hiram, Sergeant Oliver and Private Porter served in the Civil War and two of them gave up their lives for the old flag he loved so well. We feel confident he, like Paul, has fought a good fight, has finished the course, has kept the faith. Henceforth is laid up for him a crown of glory, eternal in the heavens. The deceased was one of the big men of this community and was always active when there was a move on foot for county, state or nation, and there was no limit to the time he would give. For his age he was very active and prior to his death was feeling better than common. It is doubted that such men as Mr. Cleveland should pass off the stage of action at this time, as they are needed when our country is in war. Funeral services were held from the house, conducted by Rev. Coates, of Morgan Chapel and the remains were laid to rest in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
