He was born April 7, 1920, in Westminster to John William and Cora Garrett Chiles, who preceded him in death. On July 31, 1946, he married Vera Roeder, who survives in Delphos. Chiles, 89, died at 2:20 a.m. Jan. 5, 2010, at VanCrest Health Care Center, Delphos. He was born April 7, 1920, in Westminster to John William and Cora Garrett Chiles, who preceded him in death. On July 31, 1946, he married Vera Roeder, who survives in Delphos. Mr. Chiles had been a line supervisor for the Ohio Power Co. for 40 years. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Delphos. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II serving as a technical sergeant with the 66th Troop Carrier Squadron, where he was a mess sergeant. He enjoyed fishing, making lamps out of old electric meters and going to play fiddle with his son-in-law every week. He loved to travel to his 66 TCS annual reunions all over the United States and with his family in his recreational vehicle. Survivors also include a son, Harvey M. (Linda) Chiles III, of St. Louis; a daughter, Anita (James) Dunlap, of Delphos; four grandchildren, Kim Riddell, Bryan Dunlap, Robert Chiles and Autumn Ledford; and five great-grandchildren, Alex Theobald, Emma Riddell, Jenna Dunlap, Ethan Dunlap and Zoe Brewster. He was preceded in death by a half brother, Harry Decker; two sisters, Bernice Mosler and Virginia Coy; and two half sisters, Elsie Fairburn and Goldie Ziegenbush. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Presbyterian Church, Delphos, with military rites. Pastor Harry Tolhurst will officiate. Burial will be in at a later date. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Harter & Schier Funeral Home, Delphos. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Presbyterian Church or the activities fund at VanCrest Health Care Center.
