Description	:	Harvey Smith, 91 of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the Horton Community Hospital. He was born on November 10, 1922 in Whiting, Kansas the son of Simon and Birdie Ryherd Smith. Harvey graduated from Netawaka High School. After High School he served with the U.S. Army during WW II in the Southern Philippines and Asiatic Pacific Campaign where he received three bronze stars, victory medal and the good conduct medal. Read More	Harvey Smith, 91 of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the Horton Community Hospital. He was born on November 10, 1922 in Whiting, Kansas the son of Simon and Birdie Ryherd Smith. Harvey graduated from Netawaka High School. After High School he served with the U.S. Army during WW II in the Southern Philippines and Asiatic Pacific Campaign where he received three bronze stars, victory medal and the good conduct medal. On November 10, 1949 he married Nellie Esther Christie in Horton, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2013. He worked for the Department of Agriculture in Kansas City, Missouri before retiring. He was a member of the VFW #3021 where he was the past commander, American Legion #7, Muscotah Masonic Lodge #0116 and the Horton United Methodist Church. Survivors include three sons, Johnny Smith of Muscotah, Kansas, Thomas Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Donald Smith of Boston, Massachusetts, one daughter, Dixie Armstrong of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; brother, Johnny Smith of Horton, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers, Sanford, Leslie, Orrin, Junius, Peter, Norman, Eugene and Warren Smith, one sister, Katherine Spiker. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Military graveside rites and burial will be at the Muscotah Cemetery.
