Latimer and interment will be in the family plot in Springwood cemetery. The death of Dr. Cook occurred at a local hospital at 4:45 o'clock Monday afternoon. Although fairly active until a few days before before his death he had been in steadily declining health for several years. Dr. Cook was born in Abbeville county and was a son of the late Fred and Sarah Cox Cook, prominent South Carolinians. He had reached the age of 94 years, having been born on April 23, 1848. He was the oldest alumnus of Furman university and professor emeritus of that institution. He was graduated from Furman in 1873, received his M.A. degree in 1887 and Litt. D. in 1901. Before joining the Furman faculty in 1881, Dr. Cook taught for several years in Captain Patrick's high school. From 1881-1918 he was a professor of Greek at Furman and he also taught Latin and history. Dr. Cook was a Confederate veteran, having enlisted at the age of 16. He was deeply interested in church activities and was a member of the First Baptist church of this city. Admired for his loyalty, respected for his exceptional ability and beloved for his whole hearted kindliness, Dr. Cook will long be remembered by the many friends he leaves behind. Dr. Cook is the last surviving member of his immediate family. His wife, Mrs. Cornelia Carpenter Cook, died on August 20, 1936. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fred L. Hunt of Wingdale, NY, and Miss Octavia Cook of Greenville; four sons, John B. Cook of Birmingham, Ala, B.A. Cook of Walterboro, W.H. Cook of Greenville and R.E. Cook of Morganton, NC. The body is at the home awaiting the hour of the service.
