B. GILES IS FATALLY INJURED Former Alice Shoemaker of Ottumwa Dies, Result of Car Crash Near Pontiac, Ill. Mrs. Alice Giles, 53, a former Ottumwan and wife of Bert Giles, died in a Pontiac, Ill. hospital at 6:17 a.m. today of injuries received Wednesday in an auto crash. Mr. and Mrs. Giles were just starting on a surprise visit to their daughters, Mrs. Margaret Harris and Miss Martha Giles, in Kenosha, Wis., when the car in which they were traveling and another crashed headon. Mr. Giles is in serious condition at St. James hospital in Pontiac. The occupants of the other car are being held for an inquest tonight. Surviving Mrs. Giles are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Harris and Miss Giles of Kenosha; two sons, Theodore of Peoria, Ill., and John of Kenosha; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Vance, Mrs. Mrs. Grace Applequist, and Mrs. Lulu Buyack of Ottumwa and Mrs. Laura Richardson of Kenosha; three brothers, Edward Shoemaker of Cedar Rapids, and John and George T. Shoemaker of Ottumwa, and seven grandchildren. The body is being brought to the Johnson funeral chapel here pending completion of funeral arrangements. The Giles family left here about ten years ago. "GILES SERVICES," From Ottumwa Daily Courier, Saturday, August 15, 1936, Page 12: Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Giles of Peoria, Ill., who died Friday at Pontiac, Ill. from injuries received in an auto accident, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the home of her sister, Mrs. R.L. Vance, 214 South Adella street, and at 3:30 p.m. at the Wesley Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by the Rev. A.D. McClure, assisted by the Rev. R.W. Swick. Burial will be made in the Shaul cemetery. The body will be taken to the Vance home this evening.
