The second picture is an an inscription on the side of the gravestone for Bert's grandparents, Thomas and Mary Jane Shoemaker. When the picture of the inscription on Bert's grandparent's stone was first put in findagrave, a memorial was created using Bert's name as Bert Shoemaker, and he was linked to Thomas and Mary Jane (Mason) Shoemaker as his parents. Bert Giles was Thomas and Mary's grandson, the son of their daughter Alice and her husband, Albert Giles. Another memorial had been created using the picture of Baby Bert Giles' gravestone under the name of Bert Giles. On June 22, 201, at my request, findagrave merged the two memorials. This obituary, published on January 23, 1909, gave the information that Albert died, "this morning," and the date of death on his gravestone is January 22. Obituaries published in the "Ottumwa Tri-Weekly Courier," were often republished word-for-word from a previous daily newspaper. --------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Tri-Weekly Courier," Saturday, January 23, 1909, Page 8, Column 3: Dies While On Visit. While visiting with his parents at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shoemaker, 211 East Holt street, Albert, son of Albert and Alice Giles of Cedar Rapids, died this morning at 11 o'clock, aged fourteen months. The funeral will be held from the Shoemaker home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T.M. Fenwick. Interment in Shaul cemetery.∼Death certificate information found in both ancestry.com and familysearch.org incorrectly gives the name of Albert's mother as Margarete Potter.
