She was born Sept. 4, 1915, in Everest, N.D., the daughter of Anton and Allousia (Lux) Marek. She grew up in Wheatland, N.D., and then lived in Fargo, N.D., Billings, Miles City and Havre, before returning to Billings. Hattie worked as a cook at Belknap Broiler, O'Hara's, Dude Rancher and Pompey's Restaurant. Hattie enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles. Hattie is survived by her daughter, Mary Hanks; grandchildren, Gary (Bev) Hanks, Randy (Bobbi) Hanks, Tammy (Gary) Hoppe, Joe (Karen) Root, Nancy (Joe) Ruby, Tim (Shelly) Root; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Minnie Steiner of Tillamook, Ore., and Margaret Wohowski of Emett, Mich.; brothers, Joseph Marek of Wheatland, Ed Marek of Absaraka, N.D., and Leo Marek of Pinehurst, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis Root. A memorial service for Hattie will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Little Flower Church.
