Casavant, 77 years of age, who passed away Aug. 2, 1944 following a period of three years of ill health, were held Monday afternoon at Frost & Son Funeral home, the Rev. L. A. Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie B. Casavant, 77 years of age, who passed away Aug. 2, 1944 following a period of three years of ill health, were held Monday afternoon at Frost & Son Funeral home, the Rev. L. A. Johnson of the Methodist church officiating. Interment in the Pine Slope cemetery. Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Leisure of Des Moines, Iowa, and was born there Dec. 6, 1866. The family moved to Hayti, S.D., when she was a child and she received her schooling and grew to womanhood in that vicinity. She united in marriage with Charles Harrington in Bryant in 1883. In the early 80's Mr. and Mrs. Harrington came to this section, established the Snoma Store in partnership with Ben Hargraves, and for a number of years took care of the trade for that territory. The store, known as the Harrington and Hargraves, carried general merchandise and groceries, bought butter and eggs of the ranchers, paying the same as market price in surrounding towns, and with a reputation for square dealing did a thriving business. Mrs. Harrington was active in the work of the store as well as taking care of her family. After operating the business for about ten years Mr. and Mrs. Harrington purchased an 80 acre farm on the river just north of the store and made their home there. Mr. Harrington passed away in 1898, and Mrs. Harrington and the family continued to live on the farm. In 1900 Mrs. Harrington and famil[crossed out] Wm. Casavant of St. Onge locality were united in Marriage. They made their home on the farm for about ten years, in 1910 purchasing the Snoma store from Charles Blackwell and going into the mercantile business which they operated for the next 12 years, until in 1922, then returned to life on the farm. Mr. Casavant passed away Oct. 7,1931. After his deathe[last "e" crossed out] Mrs. Casavant remained for a time on the farm, then spent some time with various ones of their children until the spring of 1942 when she went to the eastern part of the state for medical care. Mrs. Casavant had spent all but her very early childhood in South Dakota and over 60 years in this part of the state. She was a very hard working woman and excellent mother, taking good care of her growing family along with her work in the mercantile business and on the farm. She was highly respected in the neighborhood for her character and business ability, and pleasant manner. Pallbearers at the funeral services were John Karinen, Louis Larson, Chrls Lars[crossed out] Larson, John Palo, Vern Palo and John Johnson, all of whom had known the deceased all of their lives. Surviving Mrs. Casavant are six children: Mrs. T. J. Melvin (Ivan says Sophia) of Belle Fourche and Mrs. A. H. Butler (Ethel Mayora) of McKenna, Wash., daughters of her first marriage; Wm. Casavant, Jr. of Oakland, Calif., John Casavant, Port Orchard, Wash' Mrs. Leon Lewis (Ivan says Carrie) Panama City, Florida, and Mrs. A (Adeline) Steffans of Clinton, Iowa. The two sons and Mrs. Steffens were present for the funeral, but Mrs. Lewis was unable to come. Mrs. Steffens was with her mother at time of her passing.
