Description	:	Hattie Hughes-Conklin - posted Dec. 27, 2000 Chelan Hattie Hughes-Conklin, 88, a longtime resident of Chelan, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Regency Manor Convalescent Center. Hattie was born July 25, 1912, at Albion, IL, the daughter of Bertram and Caroline (Potter) Hortin. She was baptized in Eller, IL on Oct. 30, 1926. She graduated from Albion Community High School in 1931. She married Roy F. Hughes at the family home on Dec. 3, 1933. They moved to Washington in March of 1934. They were married for almost 52 years until Roy's death in 1985. She graduated from Albion Community High School in 1931. She married Roy F. Hughes at the family home on Dec. 3, 1933. They moved to Washington in March of 1934. They were married for almost 52 years until Roy's death in 1985. During W.W. II, Hattie worked for the Ration Board. She and Roy purchased their first orchard and home in 1945. She was involved with the apple industry as a grower until 1984 and worked for Trout Inc. for several years. Hattie and Roy adopted a seven-month old baby girl in June of 1947. They also joined the Chelan Methodist Church that year. Hattie was active in the choir for over 40 years and served in the local UMW unit in various offices including president. She was also a charter member and past president of the Chelan Eagles Auxiliary. She was known as an excellent pie baker and shared her talent with family and friends. She loved to bowl and enjoyed league play for many years. Hattie married longtime family friend, Elbert Conklin on Aug. 25, 1991. They were married until Elbert's death on March 13, 1997. Hattie is survived by a sister, Margaret Ewing, Chelan and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her daughter, Ruth Hendrix and her husband Eudell of Chelan; two granddaughters, Caroline Schmidt and her friend, Terry Tilbury, Suzanne Taylor and her husband, Ross; and two great-grandchildren, Sara and Gage Schmidt. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Services of Commemoration will be Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at 10 a.m. from the Chelan United Methodist Church with the Reverend Victoria Roller officiating. Committal service and interment will follow at Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the roof fund or youth camperships at Lake Chelan United Methodist Church.
