A reception for family and friends was held at the Federated Church. Hazel was born in Peach, Washington, on December 8, 1915 to Walter Charles and Arta Frances Lynn Marshall. When she was seven years old, the family, which by then included a son, W. Earl Marshall, moved to Yuba City, California. She lived there until she married James Lester Reid of Alturas in 1938. Alturas also became the home of her parents and her brother and his wife Maxine over the next few years. Hazel graduated from Yuba Junior College in 1935 and from Chico State College in 1937. She met Jim at the Welcome dance at the beginning of the 1936 school year in Chico and they were engaged about a year later. After graduating, she taught for a year at Princeton Elementary School in Princeton, California. Jim and Hazel were then married in Yuba City on August 9, 1938. They made their first home in Alturas and their family grew to include daughter Dorothy and son David over the next couple of years. In 1942, they moved to Oakland, California, where Jim worked in the shipyards during World War II. At the end of the War, they returned home to Alturas, where they spent many happy years. In 1946, she started teaching at Alturas Elementary School, and she spent the next 24 years teaching first and/or second grades to Alturas children. She was very active in the Alturas community and her affiliations included Beta Sigma Phi, Beta Bridge Club, the Alturas Women's Bowling League, and the Arrowhead Golf Course Women's Club. She was a member of a bowling team from Alturas that won an Oregon State Championship. She was inducted into the Alturas Women's Bowling League Hall of Fame in 1979-80. She and Jim especially enjoyed playing golf in the Friday evening couples league at Arrowhead. She loved Alturas and Modoc County and spent many happy hours camping and fishing in the Warner Mountains. Her family was her greatest love, and she treasured the many friends she had. In 1995, Hazel and Jim moved to Chico, California, to live near their daughter Dorothy. They have enjoyed living in Sycamore Glen Retirement Home there for the past 9 years. Hazel frequently said that when she was gone she wanted the world to know that she had a great time while she was here and that they should remember the fun times they shared. She also spent her life peeved that she was only 5 feet tall because she grew up wanting to be statuesque. In the minds and hearts of those who knew and loved her, however, she exceeded her height ambitions many times over. Hazel is survived by her husband, Jim Reid; her daughter, Dorothy; her sisters-in-law Maxine Marshall of Alturas and Betty Reid of Chico; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, "Mom" (Arta Frances Lynn Marshall) and "Pop" (Walter Charles) Marshall; her son David; her brother W. Earl "Doc" Marshall; her brothers-in-law Doug Reid, Jake Pepperdine, Pete Weber, "Slim" Enoksen and Cleo Hinshaw; and her sisters-in-law Eleanor Reid Hinshaw, Cordelia Pepperdine Weber, and Mary Pepperdine Harden Enoksen.
