Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening, December 7, 2015 from 7-9 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Ms. Mills was the daughter of Samuel Hubert Cox Sr. and Retha Evans Cox. She lived most of her life in the Chicod community and attended Chicod High School where she met her future husband, Jesse Harvey Mills Jr. After marriage, she and her husband started a successful farming operation which later joined with her husband’s brother-in-law and sister to form a partnership known as Buck & Mills Farms. Ms. Mills worked alongside her husband every day and was a major force in the success of the business which eventually became the largest producer of flu-cured tobacco in the United States. After retiring from the tobacco business, Ms. Mills purchased a country supply store, Chicod Country Store, which she owned and operated for many years. Ms. Mills was known by all as a woman of great generosity and compassion who helped countless people. When school children would visit her store to buy drinks and food after school, she would on many occasions give them their purchases because they didn’t have enough money to pay for them. Hazel was known for taking food to the workers who lived on the family farm and for being the “Real Santa Claus” to their children. In later years, she sat with shut-ins and sick people in the community. Even though she and her husband divorced in 1992, Hazel gave the ultimate gift of love in helping care for him shortly before his death. Hazel was a woman who loved life and lived it to the fullest. In high school, she was a member of the All-State Basketball Team. She was an accomplished dancer, an avid hunter and a great fisherman. She was especially proud of the five-pound large-mouth bass which she had mounted and displayed prominently on one of her walls. Her zest for life made it all the more difficult when her family learned of her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The courageous vivacious woman we knew and loved was slowly replaced by a blank canvas. Still, on many days, the high spirited Hazel would shine through. Even last spring when doctors predicted her death on a weekly basis, Hazel would have none of it. She would amaze them all in the end, as she had done so many times before. We are grateful that she is now in heaven in the arms of God. The family has been so blessed by the gentle and loving care Ms. Mills received during the last years of her life. We would like to give our heartfelt gratitude to the Ayden Court Nursing Facility and Continuum Hospice for the care she received and to special nurses Cookie Whittaker, Deborah McKiney and LeShawna Howell. We give special thanks to the sitters who took care of her, LeShon Pollard and Mary Rowe. There are also numerous family friends who gave her special love and attention. They include Betsy and Billy Elks, Evonne and Kirby Boyd, Linda Evans, Hazel and Don Lang, Amanda Hamill and her family physician, Dr. Robin Adams. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband and the father of her children, Jesse Harvey Mills Jr., and a brother, Alton Cox. She is survived by her two daughters, Elaine Mills Haddock and husband Ralph of Ayden, NC and Cynthia Anne Mills of Maury, NC, a grandson, Britt Mills Haddock and wife, Monica of Columbia, SC, great-granddaughters Callie Ann Haddock and Cassidy Haddock, and great-grandson, Cayden Haddock. She is also survived by brothers Samuel Hubert Cox Jr. and wife Loretta of Greenville, NC, Garland Cox and wife Arline of Sun City West, AZ and sister Pauline Cox Hartman of Tacoma, Washington. In addition, there are many nieces and nephews including special nieces Lisa Wiggs and Beverly Cox and special nephews Greg Stokes, Wayne Buck and Keith Cox. The family will receive friends at other times than those listed above at the home of Cynthia Mills, 4200 Highway 903 South, Maury, NC.
