Obituary: Jessie Harvey "J.H." Mills Jr., 77, died Sunday morning April 30, 2006, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Boykin and Rev. James Ed Gurkin officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Mills, son of the late J. Harvey and Ida Mills, was born in Pitt County. He lived most of his life in the Chicod community and attended Chicod High School. He was a farmer and agribusiness man for 40 years until his retirement. He was a member of Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Grace Edwards Mills, in 2005. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Jesse, Hubert, Lester, Rufus and William Mills; sisters, Tessie Bradshaw, Carrie Mae Haddock, Rosa Lee Harris, Novella Stokes Page and Vera Adell Buck. He is survived by two daughters Elaine Mills Haddock and husband, Ralph, of Ayden and Cynthia Mills of Maury; a grandson, Britt Mills Haddock and wife, Monica, of Columbia, S.C.; a great-granddaughter, Callie Ann Haddock; the mother of his children, Hazel Cox Mills of Ayden; two step-sons, William Preston Mills Jr. and wife, Josina, of Greenville and Fred Mills and wife, Gaynelle, of Robersonwille; four step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Cynthia Mills, 4200 N.C. 903 South, Maury. Memorials may be made to Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church, 2872 Black Jack-Simpson Road, Greenville, NC 27858. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the following people who have shown special love and tenderness to Mr. Mills: Bill Brown, Lois Cannon, Gene and Judy Davenport and Alice Whitaker.
