She died Thursday, April 9, 1992 at Melissa Memorial Hospital at the age of 79. Hazel graduated from Phillips County High School in 1932. She was married to Walter "Max" Starbuck on September 19, 1932 in Arthur, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Patricia Ann, Barbara Jean and Wanda Renae. Max and Hazel owned and published the Holyoke Enterprise newspaper from September 5, 1946 until March 1977. Hazel worked as a bookkeeper, and also gathered local news. During their retirement, Max and Hazel spent several enjoyable winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. On these vacations Hazel learned oil painting and became quite accomplished at her art. One highlight of Max's and Hazel's retirement was the honor of their selection as Grand Marshalls of the Phillips County Fair parade in 1991. Hazel was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Church Circle and the Royal Neighbors. Her hobbies, besides oil painting, included quilting, crocheting and playing the organ. Holidays with her family were very special occasions in her life. The family remembers her playing "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." She was a good wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, George and Flora Glover, her daughter Barbara Jean, her sister Elva Thomas and her brother George. She is survived by her husband Max; her brothers Dale of Holyoke and Dock Norris of San Bernardino, California; her sisters Gladys Bruchez of Manhattan Beach, California and Vivian Scott of Fort Collins; daughters Patricia Alstadt of Omaha, Nebraska and Wanda Janik of Lyons; also, four granddaughters and one great granddaughter and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were Monday, April 13, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jack Pedotto officiating. Burial followed at the Holyoke Memorial Park.
