Max Starbuck of Holyoke was born March 3, 1910 in Hebron, Nebraska to Anna E. Frye and Clyde P. Starbuck. He died Saturday, January 7, 1995 in Greeley at the age of 84. Max moved to Holyoke as a young boy of 9. He graduated from Phillips County High School in 1931. He then worked as a printer's devil for the Phillips County Herald. He was united in marriage to Hazel G. Glover on September 19, 1932 in Arthur, Nebraska. Thereafter, he continued his apprenticeship with the Holyoke Enterprise. The Starbucks purchased the Enterprise in 1946 and owned the business for 31 years. In 1977, Max was awarded the Golden Makeup Rule by the Colorado Press Association for 50 years of newspapering. After retiring in 1977, they spent several winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Max was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lions Club, a charter member of the Wray Elks Lodge, and a former member of Holyoke City Council and the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by a daughter Barbara, and his wife Hazel in 1992. Survivors include daughters Pat Altstadt of Omaha, Nebraska and Wanda Janik of Lyons; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Services were set for Wednesday, January 11, 1995 at the First United Methodist Church in Holyoke with Jim Mort officiating. Burial was set for Holyoke Memorial Park. W. Max Starbuck of Holyoke, a printer and business owner, died Jan. 7. He was 84. A service was Jan. 11 at First United Methodist Church. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park Cemetery. He was born March 3, 1910, in Hebron, Neb. He is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel. Starbuck worked as a printer and owned the Holyoke Enterprize. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Lions Club, Wray Elks Lodge and a former member of the city council and fire department. He is survived by two daughters, Wanda Jankik, Lyons and Pat Altstadt, Omaha; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to First United Methodist in Holyoke.
