Born April 8, 1921, northeast of Odebolt, Hazel was the daughter of Louie and Marie (Thayer) Kessler. She grew up and received her education in the Galva, Iowa, area, graduating from Galva High School in 1939. On Feb. 11, 1943, Hazel was united in marriage to Duane Drake. The couple farmed and raised their two children, Nadine and Ranell, near Odebolt. They retired and moved into Odebolt in 1979. Hazel and Duane enjoyed square dancing and traveling to every state. They shared special memories of a family trip to the World Fair in New York. Hazel was a member of United Methodist Church in Odebolt, where over the years she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She was also a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Hazel enjoyed life. She enjoyed playing cards and trips to the casino. She had a talent for crafts, crocheting and knitting. Survivors include a son and his wife, Ranell and Kathy Drake of Odebolt; three children and their spouses, Jill and Richard Shadwick of Ankeny, Iowa, Dana and Jill Drake of Comfrey, Minn., and Carrie and Brad Puetz of Sioux City; three great-grandchildren, Mallory, Kendall and Sophie; a brother, Hubert Kessler of Galva; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane in 2001; a daughter, Nadine; and a brother, Wayne Kessler.
