She died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, at her son’s home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Hazel Marie (Frey) Christensen was born on March 13,1925, in Pierce, to her parents, Leo and Anena (Nelson) Frey. She graduated from Pierce High School in 1942. She attended Norfolk Junior College and worked as a civilian secretary attached to the military, having worked in Denver, Portland, San Diego and Omaha until her marriage to Kenneth Christensen in April 6, 1947, at United Methodist Church in Pierce. The Christensens farmed in the Pierce and Wausa areas. She was active in the Pierce United Methodist Church, holding several different offices. Hazel was a 4-H leader and a member of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) several years. She had remained active in her church and her church community. Her faith was an important part of her life. Hazel was a loyal friend; she wrote weekly to several soldiers during World War II and has kept up with her high school mates. After Ken passed, she kept active with several widowed friends, enjoying cards, traveling and staying up on local and world news. She had great stamina and could out work “many a young persons.” She was creative and a talented seamstress. Hazel had a green thumb and spent much time growing incredible vegetables, canning and making pickles. She loved to cook and bake, and her kolaches were enjoyed as much as her potato salad. Hazel liked being around people, and she had a wonderful sense of humor. Hazel was an avid reader and read most of the books in the Pierce library. She inspired others to try new things, and she willingly shared her knowledge and her opinions. Hazel delighted in the successes of her children and grandchildren. Hazel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anita and James Cavendar of Mesa, Ariz.; her sons, Duane (Marti) Christensen of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Steve (Sandy) Christensen of Neligh; and three grandchildren and two great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Kenneth on Jan. 27,1987; her brothers, Harold and Orval and sister, Opal Krienke. A funeral celebration will be held at the Pierce United Methodist Church on Oct. 11. Music will be provided by pianist Shirley Hetrick with the congregation singing “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers will be Alex Christensen, Neil Christensen, Keith Christensen, Robert Christensen, Robert Beltz and Ted Krienke Jr.
