Hazel Mildred (Eulinger) Amunson was born March 22, 1918, in Maysville, Mo., to Chester Arthur Eulinger and Ethel Mae (Berry) Eulinger. She attended grade school in the Maysville area and graduated from Maysville High School in 1939. She then attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Mo., graduating on May 18, 1942, with a bachelor of science degree in vocational home economics. She received the Kappa Omicron Phi award upon graduation. This honor went to the one graduating with the highest scholastic record for the four years of college as well as contributing to Kappa Omicron Phi. She was the 10th person to receive that award in the college history. Upon completion of her degree, she further attended the University of Missouri as a student of radio aircraft. In the fall of 1943, she moved to Soldier to teach high school home economics. It was there that she met Milton Le Verne Amunson, whom she later married on Feb. 17, 1945, in Omaha, upon his return from military duty in Guam. While Milton was in the U.S. Navy, she taught in Excelsior Springs, Mo. They lived in the town of Soldier until 1947, when they moved to a farm in Jordan Township, south of Soldier and resided there until the summer of 1984. The couple moved into the town of Soldier at that time shortly before Milton's passing. In the fall of 1955, she returned to teaching. Over the years, she taught in Pisgah, Ute, Soldier, Battle Creek, East Monona and Charter Oak-Ute Community Schools during her teaching career. After retiring from full-time teaching, she then worked with the Headstart program in Turin for several years as an aid and assistant. She also substitute taught for several years upon her retirement. She enjoyed many hobbies, especially gardening and particularly growing flowers. She also was a seamstress specializing in quilts and wall hangings in her later years. Many people have quilts that were hand quilted by her hands. Her greatest joy was visiting Clarksville, Iowa, and watching her grandson, Erik, participate in church and school activities. She was an active member of Soldier Lutheran Church. She also was active in the women's organizations, WELCA, and would always contribute food and time to any activity at the church, which she could see from her house window. She is survived by her son, Dale and his wife, Nancy (Eckhoff) Amunson of Clarksville, Iowa; sons, Donald and David, both of Soldier; a grandson, Erik and his wife, Angela (Meyer) Amunson of Swisher, Iowa; a great-granddaughter, Alexa Cristina Amunson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; her parents; a sister, Evelyn (Eulinger) Randol; and a brother, Keith Eulinger.
