Description	:	Hazel Sheppard of Calgary, formally of Red Deer, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary on January 18, 2011 at the age of 93 years. Hazel was born in Camrose to parents William and Bertha Purnell on August 10, 1917. She attended the Sharphead County School for grades 1 to 8 and then the Ponoka High School to complete her schooling. While living in Ponoka, Hazel worked at the Ponoka Co Op from 1935 to 1941. Hazel was born in Camrose to parents William and Bertha Purnell on August 10, 1917. She attended the Sharphead County School for grades 1 to 8 and then the Ponoka High School to complete her schooling. While living in Ponoka, Hazel worked at the Ponoka Co Op from 1935 to 1941. In 1940, Hazel married Denmar "Denny" Sheppard. The Sheppard family moved from Ponoka to Eckville in 1949 and to Red Deer in 1958. Hazel and Denny were active in the Presbyterian Church in both Eckville and Red Deer. Hazel worked in the personnel department at the Hudson's Bay Co. for several years. After Hazel and Denny retired, they spent many winters in the warmth of Mesa, Arizona. One of the highlights of their lives was in 1980 when they ventured out in their motor home for 100 days and went across Canada, right to St. John's, Newfoundland. Hazel enjoyed a good game of bridge and the many trips she and Denny took visiting family and friends over the years. Hazel is survived by her son Doug (Elaine) of Calgary; daughter Carol (Vello) Kass of Newton Kansas; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Denny and her brother Lloyd. The family would like to thank Dr. Palencia and the wonderful staff at the Chinook Care Center in Calgary for their kindness and dedication to Mother's care during her last years. A memorial service to celebrate Hazel's life will be held from the chapel of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. with Leanne V. Hall officiating.
