GATHRIGHT DIES AT 101- Mrs. Heath Blaydes Gathright, a noted weather forecaster, died today at her home, 1600 Westbrook Ave., at age 101. A native of Dabneys in Louisa County, she spent her entire life in the counties of Louisa and Goochland and the city of Richmond. Mrs. Gathright took up weather forecasting at age 13, when she was taught by her older brother. GATHRIGHT DIES AT 101- Mrs. Heath Blaydes Gathright, a noted weather forecaster, died today at her home, 1600 Westbrook Ave., at age 101. A native of Dabneys in Louisa County, she spent her entire life in the counties of Louisa and Goochland and the city of Richmond. Mrs. Gathright took up weather forecasting at age 13, when she was taught by her older brother. During the 1930s and 1940s, her forecasts appeared in numerous publications, including Norfolk and Western Railroad calendars. In later years, she had fewer customers and treated forecasting primarily as a hobby. "Television has ruined the business," she told an interviewer in 1975, because it took away advertising that used to appear in almanacs, calendars and other publications that ran her forecasts. Another reporter once wrote that almanac publishers had found her forecasts to be substantially correct 95 percent of the time. Mrs. Gathright also was a bookkeeper for her husband's automobile business for a while. Her other hobbies included reading, traveling and dining out. She was the widow of Carroll Conway Gathright Sr., who died in 1954. Survivors include three sons, John Stephen Gathright of Staunton and Carroll Conway Gathright Jr. and Ellis Eldridge Gathright of Richmond; four daughters, Mrs. Louise Lea of Alexandria, Mrs. Ann Fullhart of Denver and Mrs. Judith Cooke and Miss Dorothy Porter Gathright of Richmond; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren . A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Elpis Christian Church in Goochland County. Burial will follow in Norvue Cemetery in Louisa County. GATHRIGHT DIES AT 101- Mrs. Heath Blaydes Gathright, 101, a weather forecaster for almanacs for more than 70 years, died yesterday at 1600 Westbrook Ave. A native of Dabneys in Louisa County, Mrs. Gathright was a Richmond resident at the time of her death. She was taught the family tradition of predicting weather and making astronomical calculations when she was 13 by her brother, William Anderson Gathright. The tradition had been started by her great-uncle, R.K. Bowles, one of the early calculators. Mrs. Gathright's general long-range weather forecasts and predictions for favorable planting days appeared in almanacs for 70 years in the United States and Canada. In her later years, forecasting the weather became more of a hobby than a profession but Mrs. Gathright did maintain her Canadian client until the age of 99, according to a family member. She was the oldest living member of Elpis Christian Church in Goochland. Mrs. Gathright was the widow of Carroll Conway Gathright Sr., who died in 1954. Survivors include three sons, Carroll Conway Gathright Jr. and Ellis Eldridge Gathright of Richmond and John Stephen Gathright of Staunton; four daughters, Mrs. Louise Gathright Lea of Alexandria, Mrs. Ann Gathright Fullhart of Denver, Miss Dorothy Porter Gathright and Mrs. Judith Gathright Cooke of Richmond.
