He was baptized in his infancy in the Lutheran church of that place, attended the schools and was confirmed at the age of fourteen. He volunteered for the army and served in the cavalry up to 1866, when, after the battle of Langensalza --- the army ceased to exist, as Hanover became a Prussian province. He came to America the same year and settled at Proviso, Ill. There he was married to Louise Volker, in 1869. About 1881, he came to Sterling, Nebr., but conditions were so wild and woolly in Johnson county at that time, that after looking over the country for a short time he decided it was safest to return to Proviso, Ill. After about five years he again heard the call "go west, young man”, and heeded it, settling south west of Sterling. This time he had come to stay. Here he raised his family of nine children, to man and womanhood, and undoubtedly the development of the community was to a great extent brought about by his Sterling integrity and his ceaseless industry, coupled with an ability to overcome successfully all arising interference. On Nov. 14, 1916 his good and faithful wife was laid to rest, and he missed her these many years. He was in comparatively good health up to about two weeks before his death, when the infirmities of old age made themselves noticeable quite forceably. And then his end, came just as he had wished and prayed for it — peaceably he fell asleep. His age was eighty seven years, five months and twenty nine days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his nine children, four sons, August, Adolph, Henry, and William; five daughters, Emma Smidt, Sophia Bargman, Mary Smidt, Ida Rathe, and Martha Wilhelm; four daughter-in-laws, five son-in-laws. Of the forty-nine grandchildren forty-two survive him, and ten great-grandchildren. He was laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery west of Sterling on Oct. 22, 1928, after funeral service had been conducted in Immanuel Lutheran church by Rev. A. G. Degner, who spoke on Luke; 29-32 19. He was a simple devout christian, which lived what he professed and died as he believed in the Savior of mankind.
