To those whose faith in God remains unmovable, such a journey causes little concern, for the Christ is their companion, their friend, their Saviour. The aged citizen who bade the world farewell on Tuesday, December 10, 1929 was Mr. Henry William Horst. Born in Krokau in Holstein, Germany on April 24, 1849, he came to America in 1869. He was baptized and confirmed in Germany and there received his early Christian training as well as his elementary secular schooling. He first resided in Davenport, Iowa upon arrival in this country. On the 21st of February 1878, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Catherine Steen of Fiefbergen in Holstein with whom he was permitted to share life’s joys and sorrows for almost 52 years. Two years ago the aged couple quietly observed their golden wedding anniversary and pledged anew to one another the sacred vows taken 50 years previously. To this union six children were born, three of which preceded him in death. They were Emilie, Alex and an infant child. For many years Mr. Horst has made his home in Ellsworth county and since 1910 in our little town of Holyrood. For the last number of years Mr. Horst’s physical condition was not of the best and continued ailments of one nature or another gradually sapped away the life giving physical factors. He leaves to mourn his going his wife and the mother of three grown children. They are Herman Horst of Ellsworth, Robert Horst of Holyrood, and Mrs. Max Johansen of Wilson, Kansas. Also 6 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He attained to an age of 80 years, 7 months and 16 days. Funeral services were conducted on December 12th at 2:00 p.m. at the home and at 2:30 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church by the Rev. M. Seybold. Interment was made in the St. Paul’s cemetery. Thus another charter member of St. Paul’s has left us to join, as we sincerely hope, the church invisible above. May the Holy Spirit, the Holy Comforter find all weeping hearts receptive to His healing powers. He will lead you in all Truth. Published in the Holyrood Gazette December 19, 1929
